Transport strike in Ctg division called off
Transport owners in Chattogram division called off their indefinite strike this afternoon, around 10 hours after they enforced the strike to press home their nine-point demands including to stop allegedly harassment and extortion by law enforcers.
The strike was withdrawn around 4:00pm following the assurance of authorities concerned to meet their demand by 15 days, said Manjurul Alam Manju, president of Chattogram “Gono o Ponno Paribahan Malik-Oikya Parishad.
The transport owners took the decision at a meeting held in Chattogram Circuit House where Chattogram City Corporation Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin and other officials of Chattogram district administration, among others, were present.
Road communication of Chattogram with 11 districts was nearly cut off as a portion of transport owners enforced an indefinite strike in the division since this morning.
The strike was enforced at 6:00am today after a 72-hour ultimatum, which asked the authorities concerned to take steps to stop harassment and extortion by law enforcers, ended last night.
The strike caused immense sufferings to commuters of 16 routes as public vehicles were scarce in the city and different upazilas as well.
The affected districts include Cox’s Bazar, three hill districts—Khagrachari, Rangamati and Bandarban--Brahmanbaria, Feni, Noakhali, Cumilla.
The owners under the banner of Chattogram “Gono o Ponno Paribahan Malik-Oikya Parishad” announced the strike last night.
“Gono o Ponno Paribahan Malik-Oikya Parishad” September 4 threatened to go on an indefinite strike unless authorities concerned take steps to stop harassment and extortion by law enforcers within three days.
They also placed a nine-point demand, including not to use consumer rights act against transport workers, issuing license and updating those in a flexible condition.
