2 giraffes die at Bangabandhu Safari Park
Two of the 10 giraffes died at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park in Gazipur this morning.
The park officials, however, could not ascertain the cause of the deaths, reports our Gazipur correspondent.
“The two giraffes suddenly fell on the ground in the morning and died shortly before the vets reached there,” said Md Shahbuddin, acting manager of the wildlife sanctuary.
Shamsul Alam, project director of the park, said no symptoms of disease were detected earlier.
A five-member committee led by Prof Abdur Rahman, chairman of veterinary medicine department at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh, has been formed to ascertain the cause of the deaths, he said.
Citing “unavoidable reasons”, the authorities have closed the core of the safari park for the visitors for “indefinite period”.
The 10 giraffes were procured from mid-Africa in different phases from 2013 to 2015.
