2 ‘Jamaat’ men killed in Jhenidah ‘gunfight’

The two persons killed in Jhenidah “gunfight” earlier today have been identified as members of fundamentalist Jamaat-e-Islami and its student affiliate.

The deceased were identified as Jahurul Islam, 45, from Chudanga, and Tarik Hasan Sajib, 30, of Sadar upazila, our Jhenidah correspondent reports.

Jahurul, a lecturer of Islamic Studies department of Ashaduzzaman Hosnin Keyabagan College under Kaliganj upazila, was the Ameer (Chief) of Jhenidah municipality. Sajib, a trader, was an adviser of Chhatra Shibir of Dhaka.

Azbahar Ali Sheikh, additional superintendent of Jhenidah police said a patrol team signaled three motorcycles to stop near Bhutiargathi village around 4:00am.

“The bikers hurled crude bombs and opened fire on policemen, prompting the law enforcers to retaliate with gunfire,” the ASP said.

Three police constables -- Bulbul Ahmed, Alamgir Hossain and Nasim Uddin also received injuries during the gunfight, the official claimed.

Police recovered two shutter guns, two rounds of bullets and crude bombs and a motorcycle from the spot.

However, Sajib’s mother Mahfuza Khatun told our correspondent that plainclothes picked her son up on the evening of September 9 from Hater-Rasta area while he was returning from his in-law’s house.

She also filed a missing diary with Jhenidah Sadar Police Station on September 14. Since then he remained traceless. She claimed her son was not involved with politics.

Jahurul’s family could not be contacted.
