Youth ‘falls to death’ in Bashundhara shopping mall

A young man today “fell to his death from the level seven” of Bashundhara City Shopping Mall in Dhaka’s Panthapath area.

The deceased has been identified as Onim, 20, son of Abdul Awal from South Keraniganj of Dhaka, Mazharul Islam, officer-in-charge of Tejgaon Police Station, told The Daily Star.

Onim used to work as a salesman at a medicine store in Mitford area of Old Dhaka, the OC said.

Some security personnel and mechanics of the mall heard a thud of something falling and spotted the youth on the ground floor bleeding profusely in front of an escalator around 11:05am, said Major (rtd) Shahabuddin Chaklader, executive director (Admin and Security) of the mall.

He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) where doctors declared him dead, Sub-Inspector Bachchu Mia, in-charge of DMCH Police Outpost, said.

Later, a mobile phone, a pair of glasses and a pair of sandals were found beside the southern railing of block C on level seven of the shopping mall, the security official of the mall said.

After checking the call list of the mobile phone the identity of the deceased was ascertained, said OC Mazharul Islam.

There were no witness’ accounts on how he fell as the market was closed today and there were few security officials, Shahabuddin said.

However, the movie theatre, Star Cineplex, was open today, he added.
