Python rescued, released in Sylhet

A giant python was released to Khadimnagar National Park in Sylhet yesterday a day after it got trapped in a fishing net.

Two local fishermen Indrajit and Chittaranjan were fishing in the Bagha Haor area of Golapganj upazila on Friday when the python got trapped, said Ashraful Kabir, coordinator of Bhoomishontan Bangladesh, an environmental organisation in Sylhet, adding that the fishermen convinced the locals not to kill it.

Later, being informed by two local youths, Rasel Ahmed Raju and Kawsar Ahmed, Manjur Ahmed, president of Pradhikar, an animal rights organisation of Sylhet Agriculture University students, rescued the python and released it to the park in the presence of both the organisations' members and forest official Abdul Kader.

Frequent media reports on wildlife rescue are being helpful in making people more conscious of not killing the wildlife, Kabir added.
