Tk 300cr govt project to end child labour by 2025
The government has taken up a project of Tk 300 crore to eliminate child labour by 2025, said Mujibul Haque Chunnu, chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Labour and Employment, yesterday.
Under the project, child labourers will be provided education, training and even loans to start business, he said, adding, “The government is determined to eradicate child labour.”
He urged all not to engage children in hazardous work.
Chunnu was speaking at a discussion titled “Sensitization of the employers to facilitate education for the children engaged in transport sector”, organised by Eco-Social Development Organization (ESDO) in association with Education and Development Foundation (Educo) and Child Fund Korea at The Daily Star Centre.
About wage of migrant workers, the parliamentary standing committee chairman said workers are capable, but they did not get proper training before going abroad. Therefore, they are getting low salary compared to that of workers from other countries, he said.
Chaired by Shahid Uz Zaman, executive director of ESDO, the programme was also addressed, among others, by AKM Rafuqul Islam, joint secretary of the labour and employment ministry; and Johny M Sarker, country director of Educo.
