Students extend support to Swapan mama
Dhaka University’s Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) based socio-cultural organisations yesterday extended their support towards the beloved tea vendor Swapan mama, whose daughter was raped by a neighbour in Brahmanbaria Sadar upazila last year.
Though trial of the rape case is still ongoing, Swapan mama and his family members are now living in fear of arrest as the family of the accused have recently filed two cases against them.
At a press conference held at Dhaka University Journalists’ Association (Duja) office, they demanded withdrawal of the cases filed against Swapan mama and capital punishment for the rapist.
“All TSC-based organisations have been protesting against rape and all forms of sexual harassment since long. It’s unfortunate that Swapan mama now has to appear before the court as an accused in false cases, not to get justice over the rape of his daughter,” Abir Rayhan, president of Duja, said while reading out a written statement.
“We demand withdrawal of the false cases filed against Swapan mama and maximum punishment for the rapist,” said the students at the programme.
At the programme, Dhaka University Film Society General Secretary BM Jobol-e-Rahamat announced their next course of action.
The organisations will form a human chain today at 1pm at the base of Raju Memorial Sculpture and hold a cultural programme and protest rally at 3pm.
Ducsu Assistant General Secretary Saddam Hussain, members Tanbir Hasan, Raisa Naser and members of other TSC-based organisations were present at that time.
Abdul Jalil, popularly known as Swapan mama among DU students, has been selling tea at TSC area for the last 40 years.
