Students of DU-affiliated colleges continue blocking Nilkhet intersection
Students of seven Dhaka University-affiliated colleges blocked Nilkhet intersection in Dhaka for the second consecutive day today, demanding to allow them to sit for ongoing examinations and reopening of the campuses and halls.
The students gathered at the intersection around 9:00am today and blocked the road, halting traffic movement in New Market area.
People, particularly officegoers, have been bearing the brunt due to the halt of vehicular movement on the busy road.
The students blocked Nilkhet intersection yesterday for two hours with the same demands.
Students alleged that they are facing session jam as the colleges are affiliated with the DU.
After repeated requests, the authorities had decided to take their exams but they are now saying that they will postpone the examinations.
Mohammad Lincoln, a fourth-year student of Dhaka College, said he has only one examination left and now the DU authorities are considering postponing the examinations.
"Halls are closed following the pandemic and we were participating in the examination staying at messes. If the examinations are postponed, we have to stay at the messes at our own cost for the next three months," he said.
"Economic condition of all students are not the same. We are protesting against this kind of decision. We belief the authorities will consider it," he added.
Assistant Commissioner of Lalbagh Zone police Sanwar Hosain told The Daily Star that they are requesting the students to free the road but they are not agreeing.
They can negotiate with the university administration, he said. It's between the teachers and the students; general public are sufferings due to the road blockade, the police official said.
Contacted over phone, Prof Dr ASM Maksud Kamal, in-charge of the seven DU-affiliated colleges, said he was in a meeting.
Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Prof Akhtaruzzaman said there was no final decision over the postponement of the examination. "The file containing the recommendations is yet to be submitted to me. I am looking into it," he told The Daily Star this morning.
