Six injured in clash over patient’s death
At least six people were hurt in a clash between doctors-staff of Tangail General Hospital and relatives of a patient on Thursday night, following death of the patient at the hospital due to alleged negligence.
After the clash, a deadlock situation prevailed at the 250-bed hospital for two hours as staffers locked all gates, keeping relatives of the deceased confined to the emergency department.
“Being informed, we went to the hospital and brought the situation under control,” said Saidur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Tangail Model Police Station.
The deceased’s relatives and locals later brought out a procession in Tangail town, demanding punishment of doctors and staff.
On Thursday afternoon, one Mukul Akand of the town was admitted to the hospital with respiratory problems. As his condition deteriorated, doctors there referred him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said family members.
“We wanted an oxygen cylinder for him while taking him to DMCH but the staff refused to provide one,” alleged Humayun Rashid, brother of the patient, at a press conference at Tangail Press Club yesterday. “My brother later died at the hospital.”
Rashid alleged that doctors and staff assaulted the deceased’s wife, son and him as they protested the alleged negligence.
Narayan Chandra Saha, superintendent of the hospital, said the patient was suffering from heart and kidney diseases for a long time. He was admitted at 3pm on Thursday and doctors referred him to DMCH at 4pm.
The family members were taking the patient out of the hospital around 8pm, and by that time he had passed away, Saha said. “There was no negligence on our part. The deceased’s relatives, however, attacked doctors and staff, leaving three of them injured,” he added.
