Sell onions at govt-set price or face action
Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokon yesterday said traders will have to sell onion at the price set by the government; otherwise, actions will be taken against them.
“Special drives will go on in DSCC area in order to keep the onion price stable,” the mayor said while visiting Palashi kitchen market around noon.
Executive magistrates of DSCC launched the special drives through mobile courts yesterday to check the price hike of onions, said an official of DSCC.
“The drives will go on until the price returns to normal. We will bring the market under control through strict monitoring,” the mayor further said.
If any wholesale dealers are found stocking onions now, actions will be taken against them, the mayor warned with expectation that the onion price will come down within people’s purchase capacity soon.
He also urged Dhaka dwellers to limit their onion use to avert pressure on the supply.
The mayor also said there are some unscrupulous traders in Karwanbazar and Shyambazar who have a tendency to stock essential commodities.
“We will take legal action against the traders if they try to stock onions,” the mayor warned.
TCB has started open market sales (OMS) of onion at Tk 45 per kg across the country from September 30.
