Roads and Highways: 109 arrested in 51 cases of extortion
Different units of Bangladesh police have arrested 109 people in 51 cases filed regarding extortion at various points of roads and highways of the country.
Police units started the drive on the first day of this month against illegal toll collections from vehicles. The move came under the strict guidelines of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed and made the arrests, according to a Police Headquarters statement issued yesterday.
Earlier this month, the police chief took the initiatives to stop extortion on vehicles.
Benazir directed all police units to take action against the extortionists after discussing the issue with the road and transport owners at a meeting held at PHQ.
As per the instructions of the police chief, the concerned units of the police have been taking strict action against the extortionists on the roads and highways.
This operation aims to bring incidents of illegal extortion down to zero, the statement added.
