Road tragedies take 11 lives in 2 days
Priya was on her way to Kishoreganj to visit her grandfather. But the four-year-old did not know it would be her last journey.
She was unable to reach the destination because of a road tragedy yesterday.
She along with her mother Rupali Begum was crossing a road in Sitakunda of Chattogram to reach a bus station to buy tickets.
A truck hit them in Kadamrasul area, killing Priya instantly and injuring her mother.
Police say the vehicle hit them at high speed.
They seized the truck but the driver and his helper managed to flee, say Sitakunda Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ahsan Habib.
Like this, many other tragedies took place during the last two days across the country.
In Gaibandha, seven-year-old Alif, was fatally run over by a sand-laden tractor on Bogra-Rangpur highway in Gobindaganj upazila yesterday.
In the incident, the driver and his helper managed to escape too, say Gobindaganj police.
In Gopalganj, a couple became victims of another tragedy.
Sirajul Islam, 50, a teacher of Tejgaon School and College in Dhaka, lost his life while his wife, whose name could not be known immediately, was injured in the accident.
They were waiting for a bus beside Dhaka-Khulna highway at Gopalpur bus stand in Kashiani upazila on Friday.
At that time, a truck ran them over, say police.
The injured was admitted to Gopalganj General Hospital.
In Faridpur, two youths lost their lives in a head-on collision between a bus and a pickup truck.
The incident occurred on Dhaka-Barishal highway in Koydovi Sodordi area of Bhanga upazila on Friday.
Abul Hossain Sarker, 24, died on the spot and Shah Ali, 18, at Faridpur Medical College Hospital yesterday.
Twelve other people were also injured and they were taken to different hospitals.
In Jamalpur town, Foysal Mahmud Supta, 21, a sixth semester civil engineering student of North South University in Dhaka, was killed as a motorbike carrying him was hit by a truck on Friday.
His co-rider Sijan, 21, sustained injuries and was taken to Jamalpur General Hospital, say police.
In Savar of Dhaka, an RMG factory worker, died instantly after a Dhaka-bound bus hit him yesterday.
Police say Shahin, 33, was crossing Dhaka-Aricha highway in the area.
The vehicle was racing another bus, Savar Model Police Station Sub-Inspector Abul Kashem quoted witnesses as saying.
Meanwhile, Belayet Hossain, 35, a guard of another RMG factory, was killed after an unidentified vehicle hit him on the highway in Dhamrai the same day, say police.
In Chattogram, a man was killed as he was hit against a parked truck after being knocked by a bus in Sitakunda area yesterday.
Highway police say Humayun Kabir, 65, was standing behind the truck.
In another incident, a youth was killed and 10 others were injured as a bus got on a pavement to avert a head-on collision with a truck in Chaturi area of Anwara upazila yesterday.
The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately.
In Bagerhat, Shahdat Hosain, helper of a bus driver, was killed and 10 others injured in a head-on collision between two buses in Mollahat area yesterday.
