Pvt universities should focus on research
Deputy Minister for Education Barrister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel yesterday said most private universities are not playing their role in propagating knowledge through research.
He said these universities were thinking on commercial lines but they should dedicate themselves to research.
Barrister Nowfel said though some institutions have substantially contributed to higher education, many were lagging behind.
The deputy minister said this while addressing the second convocation ceremony of Premier University in Chattogram as chief guest.
Nowfel urged the management of private universities to change their mindset.
He said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, on assuming power in 2008, enacted the Private University Act which allowed them to guide the private universities.
Mentioning the students’ role, the deputy minister said in developed countries, alumni facilitate job placement of fresh graduates.
Despite the difference of opinions among students, they all should unite for the cause of education, he added.
UGC Chairman Professor Dr Kazi Shahidullah presided over the function, while founder Vice-Chancellor of East West University and former governor of Bangladesh Bank Dr Farash Uddin and Vice Chancellor of Premier University Dr Anupom Sen spoke as convocation speakers.
