Prime accused, 7 others arrested
Police have arrested the prime accused and seven others, accused in the case filed for killing AL leader Biswajit Halder Nantu.
Barishal police disclosed the development at a press conference held in the city’s Police Line conference room yesterday afternoon.
The arrestees are Shakil Islam Rabbi (the prime accused), Mamun Shah, Kawsar Serniabat, Ershad, Kuddus Hawlader, Hadirul Islam Hadi, Dipu and Sohag.
Saiful Islam, superintendent of police (SP) of Barishal Range, said, they recovered a foreign pistol and 2 rounds of ammunition from information gleaned from the arrestees.
They were conducting further raids to arrest other accused in the case, he added.
Biswajit was killed over control of drug trade and establishing supremacy in the area, the SP told The Daily Star, adding that hired guns were engaged in the killing and meetings were held in Dhaka and Barishal before the killing.
Biswajit Halder Nantu, chairman of Jalla Union Parishad and also chairman of Awami League in the union, was shot dead by unidentified assailants in his shop at Harta Bazar on Sep 21. His father Shuk Lal Halder filed a murder case accusing 32 individuals.
With the latest eight arrests, a total of 20 persons have been arrested so far.
