Poverty-free Bangladesh possible with public support
Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury yesterday said a poverty-free Bangladesh will be built with people's support, under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
“Bangladesh has become a global role model for development and women empowerment as a result of enacting women-friendly laws and policies under the leadership of the prime minister,” she said.
She was addressing a rally of mothers and guardians organised by Pirganj Women Technical and Business Management College on its premises in Pirganj upazila as chief guest.
The Speaker said half of the country's population is women. It will be easier to build a prosperous Bangladesh if women could be involved in the development process.
“We have increased education sub-stipend, allowances for senior citizens, divorcees, lactating mothers and honorariums for freedom fighters and other allowances for the poor by broadening coverage of social safety net programmes,” she said.
“The prime minister has established 13,500 community clinics to deliver quality integrated health, family planning, childbirth and maternity care and nutrition services."
