Over 300 steamer passengers rescued in Kirtankhola
Over 300 passengers of Dhaka-bound PS Turn, a paddle steamer operated on Dhaka-Barishal-Khulna (Morelganj) route, were rescued unscathed after the vessel ran aground on a shoal in the Kirtankhola river on Monday night.
The steamer ran aground after a sand laden bulkhead, Mohammadia-5, collided head-on with it around 7:30pm, said Anwar Hossain, a passenger of PS Turn.
Ajmal Huda Mithu, deputy director of safety and security at Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), said all the passengers of the steamer have already reached their destination safely after they were rescued around 10:00pm by another launch, Sunderban-12, while the bulkhead had sunk in the river.
Shafiq, supervisor of PS Turn, said bulkheads are prohibited from plying the rivers at night.
Belal Hossain, officer-in-charge of Barishal River Traffic Police, said they rescued the five-member crew of the bulkhead and sent them to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal.
