Over 100 ‘teen-gang members’ detained in Dhaka

Police detained more than one hundred suspected members of different teenage gangs from Dhaka’s Hatirjheel area this afternoon.

They were picked-up for their alleged involvement in eve-teasing and for consumption of drugs, Anisur Rahman, deputy commissioner (Tejgaon division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) told The Daily Star.

A team of Hatirjheel police conducted a drive at key areas of the city including Banglamotor, Modhubag and Moghbazar rail crossing.

During the four-hour long drive from 3:00pm, the lawmen detained the suspected teenage gang members, said the DC.

The drive was conducted following complaints from guardians that some teenage boys have been teasing their girls for several days and also as part of the ongoing drive against teenage gangs, said Hafiz Al Faruk, additional deputy commissioner (Tejgaon industrial zone) of the DMP.

Police will first scrutinise offences of the detainees and later take legal action against those who were involved, added Hafiz Al Faruk.

“If someone is not found guilty, they will be handed over to their guardians,” the police official added.

Dhaka's teen-gang culture first hit the headlines after a ninth grader Adnan Kabir was beaten to death in Uttara in 2017. The law enforcers carried out a crackdown on such groups who engaged in different criminal activities across the city.
