No helmet, no fuel
In a unified move to tackle safety of motorcyclists on the road, filling stations in association with Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) have come up with an initiative of not selling fuel to any biker not wearing a helmet.
SMP launched the campaign yesterday, inaugurated by Md Shafiqul Islam, additional commissioner (crime) of SMP, at Biroti Filling Station in Mirabazar area.
SMP officials and leaders of Filling Station Owners’ Association were also present at the event.
The additional commissioner said motorcyclists’ safety mostly depends on helmets, but a large number of them do not wear one. Helmet is an essential ac cessory and this campaign is for people’s benefit.
“Driving without helmet can cause a serious accident. We have been running safety campaigns for weeks. We’ve also convinced owners of filling stations and they’ve agreed to help us,” he added.
Faisal Mahmud, deputy commissioner (traffic) of SMP, “We have divided into 11 traffic zones and each one is being operated by an inspector. They will be monitoring the campaign with their teams regularly.”
Mostafa Kamal, president of Sylhet Divisional Petrol Pump Owners’ Association, said, “It’s a good decision to encourage people to take precautions for their safety. That’s why we’ve agreed to be a part of the campaign.
Jubair Ahmed Chowdhury, Bangladesh Petroleum Dealers, Distributors, Agents and Owners Association, said, “We will not sell fuel to motorcyclists, if they are not wearing helmets. We will also distribute around 500 helmets among bikers.”
Early this year, such initiatives were also taken in different parts of the country.
