NHRC condemns death threats to 3 noted citizens
National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) yesterday condemned recent death threats to prominent personalities -- Sultana Kamal, Shahriar Kabir and Prof Muntassir Mamoon, terming it an “act of cowardice” in a press release.
NHRC Chairman Kazi Reazul Hoque said threatening human rights activists of their stature is equivalent to threatening development and human rights itself.
Urging the authorities to take the matter seriously, he asked the government to ensure adequate security for them and bring the perpetrators to justice as soon as possible.
According to Sultana and Mamoon, a militant group published a magazine “Lone Wolf” in March this year, where it narrated preparations to kill the three prominent individuals.
Seeking security, Sultana and Mamoon filed GDs with Dhanmondi Police Station on March 4 and 6 respectively.
