Mob beats up man, hands him to cops over rape attempt
Police detained a 50-year-old man in the capital’s Rayer Bazar area yesterday, for allegedly trying to rape a minor.
Officer-in-Charge of Mohammadpur Police Station GG Biswas said locals people handed the suspect Hasan over to police, after an angry mob roughed him up on suspicion of raping an eight-year-old girl in the afternoon.
After providing him primary treatment, police took the suspect into custody for interrogation, said the OC.
The girl, a madrasa student, was also rushed to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital where she was undergoing treatment, he said, adding that filing of a case in connection with the incident was underway.
The father of the victim told reporters at the hospital his daughter went outside to play with other children near their home in the afternoon.
Hasan, a neighbour of the girl, summoned her through another child at his home and tried to rape her, alleged the father.
A woman living next door heard the girl scream and gathered other people. Locals caught him and rescued the girl, he said.
According to a report by Bangladesh Shishu Adhikar Forum, 279 children were raped in the first four months of this year, including 115 such incidents in April alone.
The report, based on information of news reports on child rape published in 15 leading dailies, says rape of children rose by 20 percent in the country compared to that of the same period previous year; 234 children were raped in the first four months of 2018.
