Militancy, Drug Trade: Can’t be stopped by ‘putting some to crossfire’: DMP boss
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia yesterday said militancy and drug trade cannot be stopped by only enforcing law and “putting some people into crossfire”, or sending them to jail.
“If we can strengthen social, familial and religious bonding, there will be no militancy, terrorism or drug abuse. Everything will be disciplined,” he said while addressing a workshop titled “Role of public representatives in preventing violent extremism”.
He also said militancy or terrorism is the result of moral degradation, and weak social, familial and religious bonding.
The DMP chief also said, “Militants are not sitting idle. They are still continuing their ill-attempts overtly or covertly, whenever they are getting the chance.”
He further said they are alert and intelligence agencies are working in this regard. “We are always saying there is nothing to be scared of, but there is enough for us to need to stay alert,” he said.
Asaduzzaman also said they have been able to control militancy through more than a hundred successful anti-militancy operations since the Holey Artisan attack. Their success was praised not only in Bangladesh but also across the world, he added.
He said public representatives and citizens have to step forward, and their active participation is required to eliminate militancy.
He requested parents to be watchful about the activities of their children.
Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sayeed Khokon was chief guest at the programme held at Nagar Bhaban in the capital, while Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit chief Monirul islam was the key speaker.
