‘It’s Tarique’s call’
Aggrieved leaders of the recently-dissolved Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal committee, who have been demonstrating near BNP’s central office in Dhaka protesting expulsion of their leaders and a new age ceiling in the fresh council, last night decided to end their agitation, only upon Tarique Rahman’s intervention.
They said they will accept whatever decision the BNP acting chairman takes. JCD leaders also signed an agreement in this regard at a closed-door meeting with BNP leaders at its Standing Committee Member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy’s Nayapaltan office.
According to meeting sources, other BNP standing committee members present at the meeting included Mirza Abbas and Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal.
Expelled JCD leaders Ajmal Hossain Pilot, Ikhtiar Rahman, Joydeb Joy, Mamun Billah, Asaduzzaman Asad, Bayezid Arefin, and Dabiruddin Tushar were also present.
JCD’s previous committee was annulled on June 3 through a press release signed by BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rzivi. It also added in order to be included in the new committee, a candidate must pass SSC or equivalent examination after 2000.
For two weeks, leaders and activists of the pro-BNP student organisation have been demonstrating in front of BNP central office, seeking cancellation of the age cap.
On June 22, BNP announced the expulsion of 12 JCD members, based on “specific allegations of their involvement in activities violating party’s discipline”.
