Govt official stabbed in Rajshahi
Masked miscreants stabbed a government officer at his house in Baksimoil village under Mohonpur upazila of Rajshahi yesterday.
The injured -- Altaf Hossain, 57, who is an officer of Department of Cooperatives at Manda upazila of Naogaon district -- was admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, said police.
His relatives rescued and took him to the upazila health complex after the attack at 2:15am. He was later shifted to RMCH, said Mostak Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Mohonpur Police Station.
Altaf’s wife Jesmin Ara told this correspondent that he was at home alone that night.
Quoting her husband, Jesmin said, two masked men entered the house after he went to bed without shutting the door.
“They tried to suffocate him by covering his face with scotch tape. When he tried to save himself, one of them stabbed him,” she said.
As he screamed, the attackers left him -- sensing the presence of neighbours around the house, she added.
Jesmin Ara suspects that her daughter’s ex-husband -- whom she divorced three years back -- might have led the attack with the assistance of some locals.
Eight days ago, the former son-in-law threatened her daughter of killing the entire family for getting her remarried, she said.
Since her daughter got remarried months back, the man has been harassing her over phone, she said, adding that sensing danger, she took her daughter to a relative’s house -- leaving Altaf alone at home.
