Flight attendant held with 9.5kg gold
Armed Police Battalion (APBn) officials arrested a flight attendant with 82 gold bars -- weighing 9.5kg -- at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport yesterday.
Rabeya Sheikh Mousumi, 25, was on a flight from Oman that landed at the airport around 11am.
APBn officials, on prior information, intercepted her as she came out of the airport and was about to board a microbus, Alamgir Hossain Shimul, additional superintendent (Ops and Media) of Airport APBn, told The Daily Star.
Mousumi initially denied carrying any gold with her but the officials found the bars -- wrapped in scotch tape in six packets -- attached to her body, he said.
The gold is worth around Tk 5 crore.
The arrestee told ABPn officials that one Sohel gave her the bars at Oman. She was supposed to hand them over to one Lucky in Dhaka. In exchange, she would get Tk 1.5 lakh, Alamgir said.
An APBn official said they suspect that the cabin crew member has long been involved in gold smuggling, taking advantage of relaxed checking for crew and pilots at the airport. Filing of a case was underway.
