EC has to remain cautious: law minister
Law Minister Anisul Huq yesterday said the Election Commission must remain cautious so that Rohingya people cannot become voters of Bangladesh in any manner.
"Rules will be framed to ensure hard punishment for committing such offense if necessary. The government will provide all assistance to this effect," he said.
He said this while addressing as chief guest a meeting organised by the EC on the occasion of National Voters' Day at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the capital.
Anisul Huq said the authenticity of the voter-list made by the EC since 2008 have managed to gain people's trust.
"In light of this, the Election Commission's duty is to continue preparing faultless voter-list and to keep the people's faith in tact for the future. The commission must remain cautious so that a person cannot enlist as a voter from two separate places and Rohingya people and citizens of other countries cannot illegally become voters in any manner," the minister said.
About the electronic voting machines (EVMs), the law minister said voting takes place through EVMs in many countries including the USA, Canada, Brazil, Russia, France, but some people of Bangladesh still harbour negative ideas about the technology as they do not understand how EVMs work.
He said there is no alternative to using technology like EVM in order to eliminate fake votes and vote rigging.
EC Senior Secretary Md Alamgir presided over the meeting where Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda, Election Commissioners Mahbub Talukder, Md Rafiqul Islam, Kabita Khanam and Brig Gen (retd) Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury, among others, spoke.
