DoE tears down two illegal brick kilns in Ctg

The Department of Environment in Chattogram demolished two illegal brick kilns in the district’s Karnaphuli upazila yesterday.  

Owners of the kilns were also fined Tk 30 lakh in total. The one under Hazi Abu Tayeb Brick Kilns was fined Tk 10 lakh and the other under Payra Bricks Tk 20 lakh.

The drive, led by the DoE director for Chattogram region, began at 10am and ended at 2:30pm.

Muazzom Hossen, director of DoE (Chattogram region), told The Daily Star that the two kilns were operating illegally in West Joldi area, polluting the air and damaging the top soil of nearby crop fields.

The team, in cooperation with police and local administration, demolished the chimneys and earthen ovens used for heating bricks, he said.

The fine was issued considering the damage the two kilns did to the environment. The drive against illegal kilns will continue, he added.
