A Dhaka court yesterday sent bus driver Md Junayed to jail, after he was produced before it in a case filed over the death of two girls, including a garment worker, in a road accident in the city's Malibagh area on Tuesday.
Metropolitan Magistrate Md Shahinur Rahman passed the order after Sub-inspector Md Faruk Khan of Hatirjeel Police Station produced Junayed before it and prayed for confining him in jail until completion of investigation.
No lawyer stood for the driver at the court yesterday.
The deceased in the accident are Nahid Parveen Poly, 19, who worked at MH Fashion garment factory, and Meem, 13, a fifth-grader who went to visit the factory with Poly.
Meem died on the spot while Poly was declared dead after she was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, sources said.
The accident took place around 2pm when a Gazipur-bound bus of “Shupravat Paribahan” hit Meem and Poly near Abul Hotel in Malibagh Rail crossing area.
Following the incident, several hundred agitated workers of nearby garment factories took to the street around 3pm and blocked the Malibagh-Rampura road for around four hours, vandalised around 40 vehicles and set two buses on fire.
Soon after the incident, police arrested the driver and seized the bus. Jarina Begum, Meem's mother, filed a case against the driver with Hatirjheel Police Station.
