Cache of date-expired medicines seized: Rab

Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) today seized huge amount of life saving medicines past their sell-by dates, worth around Tk 2 crore, from three wholesale medicine shops of two markets in city’s Mitford area.
The drive jointly conducted by Rab-10 and Directorate General of Drug Administration (DGDA) seized the medicines from a shop at Mitford Tower market.
The joint team led by executive magistrate of Rab Sarwoer Alam, also seized huge quantity of date- expired medicines from two other shops of nearby Habib Market during the drive.
Rab, however, could not arrest anyone in this regard, the magistrate said adding that the cartel had been doing this unscrupulous business for the last around three years.
These 69 types of life saving drugs were being used for cancer and cardiac patients and in Coronary Care Unit and Intensive Care Unit patients, he said.
He said they also have seized 82,000 labels and packets which were being used to change its manufacturing and expiry dates.
A syndicate used to bring the date expired medicines from India through Indian luggage parties and they supplied those to different medicine shops and hospitals setting up new labels on the medicines changing its expiry date and manufacturing time, said Sarwoer.
He said they are trying to arrest Bappi and Apu, owners of the seized medicines who are now on the run.
