BCL men beat up JCD leader over removal of name plaque
A faction of the former unit of Bangladesh Chhatra league (BCL) at Chittagong University (CU) allegedly beat up a leader of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) on the campus yesterday (Thursday).
Talimul Islam, communication affairs secretary of JCD’s CU unit and also a third-year student of public administration at the university, received treatment at a hospital in Hathazari.
Around 2:10pm, nearly 20 to 25 BCL men forcibly took him behind the Social Science Faculty building, Talimul said. "They started beating me up indiscriminately [and kept] asking why we submitted a memorandum to the proctor’s office regarding the destruction of Khaleda Zia Hall’s name plaque."
Abu Torab Porosh, a leader of the former CU unit of BCL, however, rebutted the allegation.
JCD’s CU unit general secretary, Shahidul Islam, condemned the attack and demanded exemplary punishment for the attackers.
He further alleged that the BCL men not only beat up Talimul, but also made him make derogatory remarks about JCD leaders and activists on Facebook Live.
CU Assistant Proctor Litan Mitra said he did not receive any complaint regarding the incident.
