BCL infighting leaves shops vandalised
At least two roadside shops were vandalised and several crude bombs were exploded during a chase and counter-chase between two groups of Bangladesh Chhatra League's (BCL) MES College unit in port city's GEC area yesterday noon, allegedly over a trivial matter.
However, no causality was reported, said police.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sheikh Nasir Uddin of Khulshi Police Station said a chase and counter-chase had ensued between two groups of BCL activists of MES College on Saturday evening over smoking.
As a follow-up of Saturday's incident, both groups again gathered on the college premises; the atmosphere has been tense since Sunday morning, said the OC, adding that at one point, both groups engaged in chase, counter-chase around 1:30pm on Jakir Hossain Road, triggering panic among pedestrians.
On information, police rushed to the spot and charged baton on the clashing BCL men to disperse them, said the OC.
Being chased by police, a group of BCL men took position in GEC area and vandalised two roadside shops, said the OC. Later, police drove the BCL men out from the spot, he added.
Additional police personnel were deployed in front of the college to prevent any untoward situation, said the OC. A case will be lodged in connection with vandalism, he said.
