Anti-VC panel wins Juta polls
The anti-vice chancellor (VC) panel has won the Jahangirnagar University Teachers' Association (Juta) election that was held yesterday on the campus.
Out of 15 executive member posts, the panel won 10 including president and general secretary, while the VC-backed panel won five posts including vice-president.
A total of 549 teachers out of 581 exercised their franchise at the polls held in the university's teachers' club. Voting started from 9am and continued till 1:30pm without any break.
The anti-VC platform, an alliance of pro-Awami League, pro-BNP and left-leaning teachers is named "Sammilito Sikkhak Samaj", while VC-backed teachers contested the polls under the banner of "Bangabandhur Adorsher Shikkhak".
Prof Ajit Kumar Mozumder of statistics department became president for the fifth time, defeating Prof Md Abdul Mannan Chowdhury of physics, by 293 votes.
Prof Sohel Rana of pharmacy won the general secretary post defeating Prof Bashir Ahmed of government and politics.
Prof Jugal Krishna Das of computer science and engineering, Assistant Prof Laizu Nasrin of English and Prof Monwar Hossain Tuhin of zoology department were elected vice-president, joint secretary and treasurer respectively.
Newly-elected president Prof Ajit Kumar Mozumder, also president of the AL faction of teachers, said, “We made an alliance with all parties, as we always stand against irregularities and indiscipline of the university administration.”
Meanwhile, left-leaning students of the university staged a demonstration on the campus during the polls, demanding JU Central Students' Union (Jucsu) election. The university units of Samajtantrik Chhatra Front and Bangladesh Chhatra Union observed separates programmes pressing the demand.
