‘All murderers must be punished’
Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) President Col (retd) Oli Ahmed yesterday called upon party leaders and activists to be ready to start a protest to “free people from the misrule of this government”.
“There is massive corruption in almost every sector of the country. It is high time we take preparation to wage a movement against this corrupt government, eliminating the ongoing dirty political culture in the country,” he said.
He was speaking at a discussion organised to mark the 13th founding anniversary of his party -- a component of the BNP-led 20-party alliance -- at Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh auditorium in the capital.
He said if countrymen could launch a united protest then dream of establishing a new government -- upholding human rights and rule of law -- can be realised soon.
Terming the recent drive against corrupt persons an “eyewash”, he said the government is yet to arrest the masterminds of corruption, though some leaders were arrested only to draw people’s attention.
“In fact, this government itself is corrupt and that is why they are not arresting the masterminds,” he claimed.
Citing Buet student Abrar’s murder, Oli alleged that terrorists and corrupt persons have been sheltered in Jubo League and Chhatra League since 1996.
“Public university authorities are not taking any step against Chhatra League as they give priority to political affiliation,” he alleged.
He said all murderers must be punished. “Otherwise, the verdict in Feni Madrasa student Nusrat murder case would seem like an eyewash to the countrymen,” he said.
He stressed on enhancing independence of Election Commission to hold a free and fair election in future.
He urged people to join his recently-formed platform “Jatiya Muktimancha” to realise their 18-point demand, including the release of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
Among others, former lawmaker and Jamaat leader Hamidur Rahman Azad, Bangladesh Kalyan Party Chairman Syed Muhammad Ibrahim, LDP Secretary General Redwan Ahmed also spoke at the discussion.
LDP was formed on October 26, 2006 by former president AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury, Oli Ahmed and 24 other former members of parliament and ministers from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
Soon after its formation, Badruddoza Chowdhury left LDP with his followers and joined Bikalpa Dhara again. Thereafter, Oli Ahmad was elected president of the party.
