AL lacks true activists
Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader yesterday observed that his party now lacks true activists amid the increasing number of leaders mostly driven by the greed for power and money.
"It appears that the number of activists in the party is decreasing and that of leaders is increasing. We don't need so many leaders. What we need now are true activists," he said.
Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, was addressing the triennial council of Rajshahi city unit of AL at Madrasa field in the city.
"One can understand the present situation by looking at the stages [of the ruling party] during meetings. We've no lack in leaders. Billboards on streets are filled with pictures of these leaders. Many are not even familiar among people; they have become leaders by themselves," he said.
He said once it was difficult to gather a hundred people for bringing out a procession in Rajshahi, but now more than a hundred people can be seen on the stage during a public meeting.
He said most of them are driven by greed and these opportunists would leave the party during its bad times. "Leaders must shun this path and follow the ideologies of Bangabandhu," he said.
He also said the party will choose its leaders selectively as conspiracies are on to destabilise the country.
Later, the AL leader abolished the present AL committee in Rajshahi. Quader announced the new committee of Rajshahi city of AL, making Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton president and Dablu Sarker general secretary.
He asked the new leaders to declare the full committee within a month.
