4 hurt in CU BCL infighting
At least four activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) of Chittagong University unit were injured in an infighting on the campus yesterday.
The injured received primary treatment from the university’s medical centre, said police. The identities of the injured could not be known immediately.
Activists of shuttle train compartment-based group “Bijoy” launched an attack on an activist of another shuttle train-based group “Choose Friends with Care (CFC)” at the university’s Central Field premises at 4pm, said police.
As the news spread, activists of CFC group rushed to Suhrawardy Hall and beat up three activists of Bijoy group and fled the scene, police and BCL sources said.
Later, both groups -- armed with weapons -- took position at Suhrawardy and Shahjalal Halls respectively, triggering a chase and counter-chase.
Meanwhile, Bijoy group called an indefinite strike on the campus last night, demanding punishment of the attackers and declared CU unit BCL President Rejaul Haque Rubel persona non grata on the campus.
Tensions were prevailing on the campus till filing of this report.
Mohammad Ilias, a leader of Bijoy group blamed Rubel for the infighting.
CU unit BCL President Rejaul Haque Rubel could not be reached over phone despite repeated attempts.
CU Proctor Prof SM Monirul Islam said they are closely observing the situation and deployed additional police forces, to avoid untoward incident.
