2 Santal teens found dead
Police found dead bodies of a college-going girl and a school-going boy of indigenous Santal community in Naogaon’s Patnitola upazila yesterday. The girl was identified as Kajoli Murmu, 18, an HSC student of Najipur Womens College and from Gupinagar village in the upazila, said Parimal Chakrabarty, OC of Patnitola Police Station.
The boy was Joy Hembrom, 15, a ninth-grader at Patnitola High School, the OC said.
Police found the two teenagers hanging from a mango tree beside an eidgah in the village yesterday morning, the OC said, adding that their necks were tied with ends of the same rope, which was tied to the tree in its middle.
Police also found their bodies tied together with a scarf from their waist, the OC said.
Quoting villagers, indigenous leaders said the couple hanged themselves after their families didn’t accept their romantic relationship.
But police said their families denied the allegations.
Noren Pahan, organising secretary of Rajshahi divisional unit of Jatiya Adivasi Parishad visited the village yesterday.
Talking to this correspondent over the phone, Noren said family members of the deceased couple learned about their relationship a month ago.
“When they wanted to marry, their families denied it,” he said.
“As the boy’s father is the village leader, he asked the girl’s father to control her behaviour,” he said adding that both families had quarrelled the previous night and rebuked them.
Fathers of the two were not available on phone for comments.
Asked about the allegations, the OC said the families remained tight-lipped during police interrogation.
“Both the fathers told us they don’t know the reason of the deaths,” the police official said.
