2 prosecution witnesses testify
A Dhaka court yesterday recorded statements of two more prosecution witnesses in connection with a case filed against Moazzem Hossain, former officer-in-charge of Sonagazi Police Station.
Dhaka Cyber Tribunal Judge Ash Sams Joglul Hossain recorded the statements of Sub-inspector Monirul Islam and constable Ziaur Rahman of Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), while hearing a case filed for recording and circulating footage of Feni madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi.
Including the duo, a total of eight witnesses have given their statements so far in connection with the case.
Monirul Islam told the court that he went to the office room of ASP Rima Sultana at around 2pm on April 23, while she was interrogating OC Moazzem Hossain. On that day, Rima seized a cell phone from OC Moazzem at 2:20pm.
“ASP Rima checked the seized cell phone and saw a video. We also saw the video. The video showed OC Moazzem was interviewing a girl,” he said.
ASP Rima also seized another cell phone from OC Moazzem at 2:50pm that day, Monirul added.
Faruk Ahmed, a lawyer for Moazzem, cross-examined Monirul and Ziaur.
The court also summoned PBI’s Assistant Superintendent of Police Rima Sultana, the investigation officer of the case, to give her statements before it on October 14.
Nusrat, a student of Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa in Feni, was set ablaze on April 6 allegedly for refusing to withdraw a case filed against the madrasa principal Siraj for sexually harassing her.
She died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on April 10.
The same day, Moazzem was withdrawn from his post of Sonagazi Police Station OC, as Nusrat’s family alleged that they were not getting his cooperation.
A footage of Moazzem asking Nusrat humiliating questions also went viral on social media, drawing widespread criticism.
On April 15, a case was filed against Moazzem under the Digital Security Act.
