Newborn baby abandoned at Dhaka Shishu hospital

Police are trying to find out the guardians of a 3-days-old baby girl who has been abandoned in a toilet of Dhaka Shishu (Children's) Hospital in Dhaka.

After finding the abandoned baby at 12 noon yesterday the authorities of the hospital informed the police and filed a general diary (GD)with Bijoynagar Police Station, Officer-in-Charge of Bijoynagar Police Station Nur-e Alam told The Daily Star.

Police are trying to find out who abandoned the baby by going through the CCTV footages of the hospital, he said.

They are also investigating to find the parents or guardians of the baby, he added.

Abdul Hakim, public relation officer of Dhaka Shishu Hospital said, “The baby was abandoned in a toilet of Block-C in the hospital. This block is for outdoor patients and, therefore, is open for everyone.”

The hospital authority also went through the CCTV footages where they could find a few suspects, but their faces are not clear, he said.

Doctors have examined the baby and she is healthy. The baby is currently kept in cabin No. 301 under the hospital’s care, he said adding that if police fail to find the guardians then she would be handed over to the Department of Social Welfare for her rehabilitation.
