Muhith defends additional perks for admin cadres
Finance Minister AMA Muhith yesterday defended the additional facilities given to the officials of the administrative cadre, as they are 'all-purpose officers' in the government services.
Muhith's comment comes at a time when there are allegations of discrimination among different cadres regarding the facilities.
“It is usual that the officers under the admin cadre will enjoy additional benefits, because their qualities are very different from other officers of other cadres,” the minister told reporters after a meeting of cabinet committee on salary anomalies at his secretariat office in Dhaka.
The finance ministry in a circular in September last year gave car loans of Tk30 lakh to the deputy secretaries of the admin cadre at only 5 percent annual interest rate. Although officers of other cadres also demanded the same car loan facility, they were denied.
Moreover, the officers of other cadres always complain about discrimination in promotions between admin and other cadres.
Replying to the queries of journalists, Muhith said these complaints have become irrelevant over the last 10 years. He said now a lot of officers of other cadres have been given postings in lucrative positions of the government.
For instance, the current finance secretary is from a non-admin cadre, he said.
