Hindus protest leasing of age-old cremation ground
Members of the Hindu community in Barisal city yesterday formed a human chain to protest against the city corporation's decision of leasing out a century-old cremation ground of the Brahma community to a private organisation.
The community members also brought out a procession demanding cancellation of the lease. The procession -- organised by Bangladesh Hindu Buddha Christian Oikya Parishad and Puja Udjapan Parishad -- started from Sadar Road and travelled though different roads of the city.
The demonstrators alleged that the Barisal City Corporation (BCC) has handed over 10 decimals of land being used as a cremation ground of the Brahma community in Notun Bazar area to Family Planning Association of Bangladesh (FPAB) for its office and a hospital.
Suronjit Dutta litu, secretary of Puja Udjapon Parisad's Barisal city unit, said, “The BCC does not have the jurisdiction to lease out a cremation ground.”
He also said they would be forced to declare tougher programmes unless the BCC cancels the lease.
BCC Chief Executive Officer Mohammad Waheduzzaman however said the BCC holds the right to lease out any land that belongs to it. But he would look into the matter and, if necessary, would cancel the lease if anomalies are found in the process.
