EX-UP chairman sentenced to 4 years in jail
A court in Chittagong yesterday sentenced a former union parishad (UP) chairman of the district to four years in jail in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in 2009 over amassing illegal wealth and concealing wealth information.
The convict, Nurul Haque, was a former UP chairman of Charandip union under Boalkhali upazila in Chittagong, said the court sources.
The court of Chittagong Divisional Special Judge Mir Ruhul Amin handed down the verdict as the UP chairman was found guilty of amassing illegal wealth and concealing his wealth information, said ACC's Public Prosecutor (PP) Advocate Mahmudul Haque.
After the verdict, the court sent him to jail, he added.
PP Mahmud said the court sentenced him to one year in jail under section 26(2) of ACC Act and awarded three more years in jail under section 27(1). The court also fined him Tk 51.26 lakh.
