DMP plans tight security for Ashura
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) yesterday said it has taken tight security measures ahead of the holy Ashura that is to be observed on Sunday.
Taking account of the Hossaini Dalan bomb explosion incident of 2015, the DMP dog squad is scanning the building and the scanning will go on till the end of the event, DMP Commissioner Asadzuzzaman Mia said at a security briefing in front of the Hossaini Dalan.
“The Tajia procession on the occasion of the holy Ashura ended safely in 2016 as we devised a new security plan based on the previous bomb blast experience,” he said.
At least two people were killed and over 150 others injured in bomb explosions in front of the Hossaini Dalan on October 23, 2015.
Replying to a query, the DMP chief said a charge sheet has been filed with a court in this regard, several of the accused in the case were arrested and several others killed in anti-militancy drives.
This year, the Tajia procession of the 9th of Moharram (Saturday, September 30) will start at 9:00am from Hossaini Dalan and end at Dhanmondi Lake. The 10th Moharram Tajia procession will begin at 2:00pm.
Participants will need to go through security archways installed at the starting points of the procession, said Asaduzzaman Mia.
The processions will be cordoned off by police and no one will be allowed to join a moving procession from outside, he said, adding that bags and sharp objects will not be allowed in the procession while firecrackers will remain banned during the event.
Flag staff taller than 12 feet will not be allowed in the procession, he also said.
Monirul Islam, DMP's Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit chief; Abdul Baten, joint commissioner of Detective Branch; and other high police officials were also present at the briefing.
