Dhaka Bypass to be built under PPP

The government will construct the Dhaka Bypass (Joydevpur-Debgram-Bhulta-Modonpur Road) under public-private-partnership (PPP) expecting it to play an important role in addressing the acute traffic congestion in the capital.

The 'Support to Joydevpur-Debgram-Bhulta-Modonpur Road (Dhaka Bypass)' project under PPP was approved by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec), involving Tk 236.50 crore, in this regard.

The Roads and Highways Department under the Road Transport and Highways Division will implement the project by June 2020 with funds from the government.

The project will be implemented at Joydevpur and Kaliganj upazilas under Gazipur district along with Roopganj upazila, Sonargaon upazila and Bandar thana of Narayanganj district.

Talking to UNB, a Planning Commission official said the project has been set to be implemented under PPP basis to reduce the infrastructural gap as there is a need to invest around 2-6 percent of GDP in infrastructural sector to materialise the Vision 2021.

The proposed 48-km long Dhaka Bypass is a national highway and is one of the 13 PPP projects to be implemented under the Road Transport and Highways Division.

The proposed Dhaka Bypass will connect the Joydevpur-Tangail National Highway (N-4), Dhaka-Chittagong National Highway (N-1), Dhaka-Sylhet National Highway (N-2), Dhaka-Mymensingh National Highway (N-3) alongside some regional highways and district roads.

"Through the proposed bypass, passenger and goods-laden heavy buses and trucks will be able to travel from northern and western parts of the country to eastern and southern part without entering Dhaka city.

So, this bypass is very important for addressing the traffic congestion of Dhaka city," the official added.

Regarding the project, Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said once implemented, it will play an important role in boosting the national economy.
