Teachers' association of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) and Bangladesh Chattra Union of Chittagong University (CU) unit held separate programmes yesterday condemning the attack on eminent writer Prof Muhammed Zafar Iqbal.
Buet Teachers' Association formed a human chain in front of the Shaheed Minar on the campus, said a press release.
Prof Dr M Kaykobad of the department of computer science and technology, and Prof Dr AKM Masud, president of the teachers' association, delivered speeches on the occasion. Around 200 teachers attended the programme. They all demanded exemplary punishment for the attackers.
Meanwhile, activists of Bangladesh Chattra Union of Chittagong University unit arranged a programme titled “Protibadi Boi Pora” (reading in protest) to condemn the attack on Prof Zafar Iqbal, reports our correspondent.
Some 30 activists gathered on the Jarul Tola premises on the campus and read books written by eminent writers to express their solidarity with Prof Zafar Iqbal.
Drishan Pradip Chakma, president of CU unit Chattra Union, said extremists should not be allowed to win. He said they arranged such an event since “reading quality books can refrain new generation from such activities”.
Prof Zafar Iqbal came under a knife attack during a programme on Shahjalal University of Science and Technology campus in Sylhet on Saturday.
