Maritime expo begins in Ctg
A three-day international maritime and offshore exposition, the first in the country, began in Chittagong city yesterday focusing on shipbuilding, repair and breaking, shipping, maritime and offshore engineering and port and logistics.
Savor International Limited and Fireworks Trade Media Group are organising the “Bangladesh International Marine and Offshore Expo (BIMOX) 2018” at GEC Convention Centre, open from 10:00am to 7:00pm.
Of the over 14 foreign participants, BT Marine, a UK-based propeller manufacturer, says it has been doing business for the last 10 years with several Bangladeshi entities like Ananda Shipyard, Karnaphuli Shipyard, Khulna Shipyard and Celestial Tech.
Its managing director, Andy Tudge, sees a bright future here for shipbuilding.
Hopes of rising demand also came from Nixon Goh, managing director of Singapore-based Oceanic Marine Pte Limited, a designer, developer and manufacturer of steering gear and deck equipment.
Meanwhile Chinese company Tianjin Puyou Mech. & Elec. Equipment Corporation's Project Manager (marketing department) Cui Yan said they were seeking good business through the event.
The company designs and produces electric motors, pumps and control equipment used in offshore oil fields, channel dredging, fire-fighting, mining and environmental protection.
Of the local participants, Chittagong-based Ocean Electrical Limited has been providing electric engineering solutions to Western Marine, Ananda Shipyard, Chittagong Dry Dock, Khulna Shipyard and others since 2013.
The firm designs and manufactures switchboards, distribution panels, motor control centres and wheelhouse consoles.
Khulna Shipyard Limited, run by Bangladesh Navy, is displaying replicas of 16 vessels they built recently.
ASM Fahaduzzaman, officer-in-charge (electrical), said they constructed 700 water vessels including warships, oil tankers and merchant vessels since 1957.
Addressing the event's inauguration, Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry's President Mahbubul Alam said shipbuilding has become a major promising industry.
Savor International's Managing Director Faizul Alam said they aimed at presenting cost-effective quality products and innovative ideas. He hoped to organise such expositions regularly.
