Jewellers can now import unrefined gold
Good news for the country's jewellers as the government is allowing them to import unrefined gold.
The revised proposal of the Gold Policy-2018 of the commerce ministry was approved yesterday by the cabinet committee on economic affairs.
According to the current policy, only refined gold can be imported.
Many countries import unrefined gold, Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal told reporters in a virtual briefing after the meeting.
He said the government will also allow the installation of necessary machines for refining the imported unrefined gold.
On January 12, the retail price of each bhori or 11.664 grams of 22-karat gold in Bangladesh was Tk 72,667, which hit a record high of Tk 77,216 on August 5 last year thanks to rising demand in the global market during the pandemic.
