BRTA starts issuing driving licences, vehicle registration on limited scale
Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has started issuing driving licences and vehicle registration on a limited scale and in case of emergencies.
The transport regulatory body started providing the services from yesterday and will continue until further notice, a BRTA official said today.
People who are going abroad for study or work, for UN peace keeping missions, or facing emergencies, will get driving licences, reads the BRTA circular issued on Saturday.
BRTA will provide registration of vehicles in case of emergency following all necessary health safety guidelines, it added.
The authority had halted driving competency tests, collection of fingerprints for licences and registration and updating vehicles' fitness from April 5 this year, when the government imposed restrictions on movement of people and transport.
BRTA halted all types of services from April 14 when the government strengthened the restrictions and shut down all government and non-government offices.
However, many people, especially those who want to go abroad for work, have faced problems without drivers' licence services.
On Thursday, Bangladesh Reconditioned Vehicles Importers and Dealers Association (Barvida) urged the authority to resume vehicle registration services on a limited scale.
