Bangladesh reached 52 for no loss after 11 overs. Soumya Sarkar was batting on 35 and Tamim on 16. Tamim was watchful and played second fiddle to his more aggressive partner. Soumya took the attack to the New Zealand bowlers after Bangladesh were asked to bat first.
The left-hander endured a tough time early on with the new, white ball swinging and seaming appreciably. When the bowlers were short or bowled at his pads, Soumya was quick to pounce on them and kept the scoreboard moving at a reasonable rate.
New Zealand captain Tom Latham won the toss and decided to field first against Bangladesh.
Bangladesh's first match against hosts Ireland was abandoned due to rain but there was cause of concern for the Tigers during the 31 overs that were played as they had suffered a batting hiccup due to poor application from the top order batsmen on a green-top, before Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudullah Riyad salvaged the situation.
Bangladesh played the first international at the venue in 1999 in the World Cup match against West Indies, which they lost by seven wickets. Tigers captain hoped that rain will not play foul again as they were looking to play matches ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy in England.
