Swadhinata Padak: Rois Uddin dropped amid criticism
The government yesterday published a revised list of names for "Swadhinata Padak 2020", excluding SM Rois Uddin.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to hand over the award to the recipients at a function in Shapla Hall of Prime Minister's Office in Dhaka on March 25, said a revised press release issued by the cabinet.
On February 20, the cabinet declared nine persons and one institution as recipient of the award. Rois Uddin's name was on the list.
The list was met with wide criticism on and off social media for including Rois Uddin, who according to many wrote poems in incorrect Bangla.
Many also claimed that they have never heard of him or were not familiar with his work.
Against the backdrop, the cabinet issued the new list.
The recipients are: Jute and Textiles Minister Golam Dastagir Gazi, Commander Abdur Rouf (posthumous), Md Anwar Pasha (posthumous) and Azizur Rahman for their contribution to the Liberation War; Prof Md Obaidul Kabir Chowdhury and Prof AKMA Muqtadir for medical science; Kalipada Das and Ferdousi Mazumder for culture; and Bharateswari Homes for education.
