Jubo League leader among 2 killed in ‘shootouts’
A Jubo League leader and an alleged robber were killed in two separate “gunfights” with Rab in Chattogram and Moulvibazar yesterday.
In Chattogram’s Agrabad area, Khorshed Alam, 45, senior vice-president of ward-28 Jubo League, was shot dead during a raid around 9:30pm.
Tipped off about raa group of miscreants and extortionists gathering in the area, a Rab team conducted a raid beside World Trade Centre last night, said Assistant Superintendent of Police Kazi Md Tarek Aziz of Rab-7.
Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the suspects opened fire, forcing the officers to retaliate.
After a while, the suspects retreated and the bullet-hit body of Khorshed was found at the scene.
Three firearms were found at the scene, the officer claimed.
Khorshed was accused in at least eight cases filed with different police stations in the city, he added.
In Moulvibazar’s Sreemangal, suspected robber Zainul Islam, 36, of Baralekha upazila, was killed in a “gunfight” with Rab.
Senior Warrant Officer Mohammad Abdul Jabbar of Rab-9 said a gang of robbers was preparing for a robbery in Satgaon area.
Tipped off, a Rab team raided the area around 3:00am, he said.
The “robbers” started shooting at the law enforcers who were forced to retaliate, he said, adding that after the “gunfight” ended, the body of Zainul was found at the scene, he said.
Zainul was accused in several cases filed with Sreemangal Police Station, said Officer-in-charge Abdus Salek.
