Rape suspect sent to jail in Lalmonirhat
A Lalmonirhat court yesterday sent a man to jail on charges of raping an 11-year-old girl in Hatibandha upazila of the district.
Police arrested the accused -- Zahedul Islam, 18 -- on Thursday night and placed him before court yesterday morning.
Omar Farooque, officer-in-charge of Hatibandha Police Station, said the girl's family filed a case with the police station accusing two -- Zahedul and his cousin Aynal Miah, 27 -- on Thursday.
Aynal is on the run and police are continuously raiding different areas to arrest him, the OC added.
Quoting the family members, police said the duo picked her up when she was returning home from a nearby market on Wednesday. They took her to a maize field and raped her.
Hearing her scream, locals rescued her and sent her to Hatibandha Health Complex. Later, she was admitted to Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital, police added.
Aminur Rahman, resident medical officer of Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital, said it seems like the girl was raped but we are yet to submit the test report to the police.
The girl is not out of danger yet, he added.
The girl's maternal uncle alleged that the two accused had been stalking the girl on her way to school for last few months. The man also alleged that the family members of the accused were threatening them to withdraw the case.
